On October 5th, 2025, Typhoon Matmo, the 21st typhoon of the year, made landfall along the coast of Zhanjiang City, Guangdong Province, severely damaging golden pompano aquaculture in Zhanjiang and Yangjiang.
It is understood that the fish cages in Zhanjiang were severely damaged, and deep-water fish cages off the coast of Yangjiang were almost completely destroyed, resulting in a short-term supply disruption. Hainan's main aquaculture areas were not affected, and fish farmers are generally taking a wait-and-see approach, awaiting price increases. Overall market supply is expected to be tight in the short term.
According to local fish farmers, fish cages in several areas were damaged by the wind and waves, their structures damaged. Cages were also collided, squeezed, and drifted with the wind and waves. Some cages even drifted away, resulting in the escape of large numbers of golden pompano, and fish farms were not spared.
The impact of Typhoon Matmo on golden pompano aquaculture in Hainan was relatively limited. While the typhoon caused some damage to fish farms in Haikou, the main aquaculture areas of Lingao, Danzhou, and Changjiang remained largely unaffected.
Local farmers noted that Typhoons Butterfly and Swordfish caused significant damage to fish fry, leading to a decline in overall aquaculture production. Currently, only 40-50% of the golden pompano stock remains. Because many farmers rushed to harvest golden pompano before typhoon Ragasa, the amount of fish available for sale has been relatively low.
The industry predicts that the golden pompano market supply will remain tight in the short term. Due to the expected price increase, most local farmers prefer to continue aquaculture and wait for the price to rise.
