Tilapia and basa production are expected to grow strongly in 2025

Recently, the Global Aquaculture Alliance (GSA) annual meeting "Responsible Seafood Summit" held in St. Andrews, Scotland, Rabobank chief analyst Gorjan Nikolik forecast the 2025 production of major aquaculture species in the market report.He predicts that global tilapia production will exceed 7 million tonnes next year on the back of rising production in China and Indonesia.

 

"Based on 2018-2021 data, we had forecast a slowdown in China's tilapia production growth, but in 2023 the growth rate is 2.9%, reaching 1.8 million tons; We expect China to produce more than that by 2025." "Indonesia's production growth since 2010 was 9.6 %, slowing to 6.6 % in 2023, 5.4 % in 2024 and 3.6 % in 2025 to 1.6 million tons," Nikolik said.

In Africa, tilapia production is returning to growth after declining in 2020-22, with production set to rise back above 1 million tonnes this year and next, all sold on the local market. In the past, Africa's growth rate was around 4%, and in the next few years it will be 2-3%.

Vietnamese basa fish is growing strongly

 

According to the survey, the production of basa fish in Vietnam will increase by 10% in 2023. Nikolik expects Vietnam's production to grow 5 percent in 2024 and 8 percent in 2025 to 2 million tons.
