According to the latest data released by the Ministry of Finance of Japan, in December 2024, the import volume of roasted eels in the Japanese market reached 1,191 tons, and the cumulative import volume for the whole year was 22,001 tons, a year-on-year increase of 22.1%. This data reflects the strong growth in demand for eels in the Japanese market, especially domestic eels from mainland China, which have become the main force in market supply.
Judging from price trends, the unit price of imported roasted eels has also increased significantly. The average unit price of imported roasted eels in 2024 is 2,611 yen/kg, an increase of 145 yen over last year. The unit price of imported roasted eels in December is 2,616 yen/kg, an increase of 135 yen year-on-year.
Although December is usually the off-season for eel imports, there was no overstock in the market, which surprised industry insiders. Some trading companies said that although import volumes are high, most products still go to commercial customers, and these import volumes only account for 10%-20% of the total volume, so they do not exert significant oversupply pressure on the market. Moreover, from the perspective of the overall market, the increase in import volume has not brought about drastic fluctuations in prices. Instead, it shows consumers' stable demand for high-quality eel products.
As the 2025 eel fry fishing season enters a critical stage, the market remains concerned about the fishing situation of eel fry in the new season. At present, the fishing situation of eel fry is still unclear, which has also added uncertainties to the eel market in the next few months. Industry insiders said that although the overall import volume has increased, future market prices may continue to fluctuate due to the uncertainty of domestic and foreign supply and demand relations and fishing seasons.
